Performance Laptop Options for Road Warriors by elise on September 6, 2007
Q: I’m shopping for a laptop and need a “road warrior” type model but do not want to skimp on performance. I will be using engineering, word processing, and spreadsheet software programs and need to access the internet for researching and downloading lots of data files. Multi tasking is how I get things accomplished security should be “bullet proof”. My price range $1,500 - $1,700, any recommendations?
A: Toshiba has several laptops in your price range that will meet your needs. The Toshiba Tecra A9 is described as a durable performance laptop. It comes with a DVD Burner, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. You also have a choice of processors, and can upgrade the display, hard drive size, and amount of RAM. If you prefer Windows XP in lieu of Vista, it is still available with new laptops. You should be able to run all of the applications you choose to use on this laptop, and there is also an option to purchase two versions of Microsoft Office 2007 (Basic or Small Business Edition) if you need it. As far as security is concerned, you will need to learn to secure your laptop using the anti-virus software of your choice, anti-spyware software, and a personal firewall. You are better off learning about PC security and installing applications that suit you rather than relying on the software that is delivered with any laptop you purchase. The most important part of securing your laptop is knowing what tools to use, and being careful when surfing the internet.
Alternatively, HP has a wizard that chooses laptops to fit your needs based on your answers to several questions about how you plan to use it. Virtually all of the laptops HP has to offer are in your price range and also have a wide range of options for customization.
