Alternatives To Norton Internet Security 2007

by on December 3, 2007

Q: My 2007 Norton Internet Security system is about to expire and I was thinking of changing to another brand because Norton makes my computer really slow. Do you have any recommendations?

A: Norton software is notorious for causing computers to run more slowly. Indeed, problems caused by Norton have been the subject of several answers here at AskAGeek.com. A company called McAfee is perhaps Norton’s biggest competitor. Unfortunately, McAfee also has a reputation in some circles for causing computers to run slowly. Thankfully, there are many alternatives to Norton and McAfee. Some of the more respected security solutions available for Microsoft Windows computers include:

  1. Kaspersky Internet Security includes an antivirus, firewall, and much more. It has been highly rated by many reviewers. I have never had an opportunity to use Kaspersky software.
  2. AVG Internet Security also has antivirus, firewall, and more. AVG products have been praised for not causing computers to run slowly. Free AVG software is also available.
  3. I have installed the free version of Avast! Antivirus for some friends of mine, and I am testing the professional version on my own computer. Great software in my opinion!
  4. ZoneAlarm’s free firewall has also impressed me greatly. ZoneAlarm sells software with antivirus capabilities as well.

You might want to consider switching from Microsoft Windows to Mac OS X or Linux, both of which are currently immune to computer viruses.
