Do not use "quick" formatting. Note that the system recovery discs/utilities that come with most computers today are NOT the same as a Windows XP Pro installation disc, and probably won't allow you to specify an installation destination. Incidentally, you can confirm whether or not Windows XP Pro is detecting your external hard drive by going "Control Panel => Administrative Tools => Computer Management => Storage => Disk Management". PS: I recommend that your install XP Pro while your external hard drive is connected to the computer that will be used with it most often. Did this help?
