How to get sound from my laptop to my television using HDMI?

by on December 2, 2008

Q: I’m unable to get any sound through the TV speakers when trying to connect my HP Pavilion dv9000 laptop to my Sony Bravia 40w3000 LCD TV using an HDMI cable. Great picture but only get audio from the laptop

A: You may need to set preferences in your laptop’s Control Panel for sound and/or HDMI in order to get sound from your computer to your television. You should also confirm that you are not using an HDMI to DVI cable, as such cables are cannot send audio from your laptop to your television. And make sure that your computer is using the latest drivers, firmware, and BIOS from HP by selecting your exact computer from an official list. Contact HP if you are unsure which computer is yours. You may also wish to contact HP in order to confirm that your laptop’s HDMI port is capable of sending audio — some HDMI ports only send video.

A quick search of the Sony website does not show any updates available for your television. Nevertheless, you may wish to contact Sony to confirm this.

TIP: View your laptop’s owner’s manual and your television’s owner’s manual. These provide various tips & workarounds that may help you.
