Why does the pointer on my dell laptop move when I don’t touch the trackpad?
by Guest Geek on December 15, 2008Q: My Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop computer cursor is every erratic. When I click the left button on the mouse pad it scrolls down on its own. In my search engine I can’t type what I want because it scrolls down real fast or puts what it wants. I can’t reply to any messages because the cursor moves down and prevents me from typing. Can you diagnose the problem and give me a solution?

The problem you describe often happens when a trackpad is dirty. Human hands transfer lots of oils, dead skin cells, etc. to the surface of a computer’s trackpad.
I recommend that you shutdown your computer. Then use a damp paper towel to clean your trackpad. Next, use a dry paper towel to absorb as much of the remaining moisture as possible. Even after using a dry paper towel, there will be some remaining moisture on your trackpad. Wait about 5 minutes for the remaining moisture to evaporate, then start your computer.
Let me know if this solves your problem. If it does not, I have more ideas for you to try. Thanks!
