How can I connect my computer to my TV so I can watch shows from the internet on the big screen?

by on January 21, 2009

Q: I am thinking about watching internet TV by hooking my laptop to my TV. Is this possible? If so how do I do it? I have a Compaq Presario 2200 with high speed internet and a Vizio 32″ HDTV. What do I hook to and where. Also is there a better than most software package for internet TV and most of all is this legal?

Check to see if you have an S-Video output on the back of your laptop, it looks a little bit like a PS/2 mouse/keyboard port, It will either be black or yellow. You will also need a 3.5mm headphone jack to the red and white phono plugs.

Let me give you my setup.

First, I have an IBM t40 laptop. I purchased a 15′ VGA cable that I connect to my TV (Samsung 46″, I forget the model). Once you’ve connected the computer to the TV you then need to configure your TV to act as an external monitor. Your Compaq may automatically do this, it may not. Assuming XP, right click on your desktop > properties > settings. Hit identify. Your screen should say 1 and your tv 2. If tv is displaying the same as your screen then you need to select the “extend my Windows desktop on this monitor” check box. After that, just drag your browser or media player to TV and off you go.

As for sound, get a cable that has a 3.5mm jack to RCA cables and plug it into your laptop and receiver you’re all set.

Last thing to check is your power options, make sure your screen saver doesn’t come on and that your computer doesn’t go into hybernation.
