How come multiple characters type when I press just one button on the keyboard?
by STEPHOOSH on January 26, 2009Q: Some of my Dell Inspiron 1520 keys are doing strange things. Some keys are adding characters and some are not displaying what they are supposed to. For example, when pressed the “h” key shows “h6”, “g” key “g5”, “5” key “g5”, and “6” key “h6”. I don’t get it. I haven’t spilled anything on it but some of my keys are sticky feeling.

Sounds like you have a hardware problem with your laptop’s keyboard. You can try contacting dell support if you have any kind of warranty with them, or your local computer hardware professional to see if they can do anything to fix the keyboard.
However you might be stuck needing to purchase a new laptop.
If this is completely out of the question, plugging in a USB keyboard to the laptop should work just fine and allow you to still use the laptop. Naturally this is a big hit on your laptop mobility, but it’s better than nothing!

It might be worth your time to reinstall Microsoft Windows on your laptop. You’d be surprised how many times that fixes problems like yours.
Please keep us up-to-date on your progress.

Oops! I forgot to mention that you should backup your important files to CD-R (or similar) before reinstalling Windows.
