The Intel Core Duo is specific to laptops, the Intel Core 2 Duo has versions that have been manufactured for both laptops and desktop PCs.

Core Duo is old technology and can only run 32-bit programs. On the other hand, Core 2 Duo is current technology and can run both 32-bit and 64-bit programs.
PS: Some desktops were actually manufactured with Core Duo processors — for example, Mac Minis from Late 2006.
