How come my antivirus program finds no problem but my computer is still really slow?

by on February 25, 2009

Q: What is the best free anti-virus program? I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop and it doesn’t restart correctly. The windows sidebar takes forever to show up on the screen and I can’t do anything until it shows up. It’s like my computer freezes. I have Avast antivirus, but in the scan not a single virus is detected.

Viruses, malware, etc can cause your computer to run slowly. But believe it or not, a more common cause is lack of proper software maintenance. In my opinion, the best FREE software maintenance programs for Microsoft Windows are:

    http://www.ccleaner.com/ (both tools, all options)
    http://www.defraggler.com/
    http://www.recuva.com/ (optional)

You will also need to run an error-check on each of your computer’s hard drives. Go Start Menu => My Computer => right-click on hard drive => Properties => Tools => Error-checking => choose both checkboxes => schedule the error-check for the next time your computer starts => restart your computer. Repeat this process for all hard drives in your computer.

Lastly, allow me to congratulate you for choosing Avast, which in my opinion is the best free antivirus solution. No security program will ever be perfect, but Avast is very good. If you ever feel like paying for your security software, I recommend Kaspersky Internet Security 2009.

PS: All this maintenance is required because even the latest version of Microsoft Windows is based on ancient software technology. Other operating systems, such as Mac OS X and Ubuntu Linux require less maintenance and are safer from viruses, malware, etc than Microsoft Windows.
