How come my CD drive only works when it wants to after dropping my laptop?

by on February 25, 2009

Q: I dropped my laptop about 3 months ago and everything seems to be working fine except my CD drive, which now only works when it wants to. One time I wasn’t even trying to access my CD drive and it just turned on by itself so I took advantage of the moment and uploaded all my CD’s . Now it wont work. When I dropped it 2 dents occurred on the 2 right side corners and the drive sticks out a little, but it still clicks in and out as it normally would, but when it doesn’t work it makes a beeping noise and like a struggling noise. Is there anything that I can do to fix this?

  1.

    There are three possibilities:

    1. Only your laptop’s CD drive was damaged. If that’s what happened, you can replace your existing CD drive with a new one.

    2. Only something else in your laptop was damaged. If this is what happened, you will need to consult with a hardware expert in your area — he/she will be able to determine whether the damage is repairable or not.

    3. Your laptop’s CD drive and something else in the laptop itself was damaged. If this is what happened, If this is what happened, you should consult with a hardware expert in your area. Again, he/she will be able to determine whether the damage is repairable or not.

In other words, your best option is probably to seek the help of a hardware expert in your area.

PS: How old is your laptop? If it is more than 3-4 years old, you should strongly consider purchasing a new laptop.
