How come my web browser on my HP notebook running Windows Vista stops responding?

Q: How come my web browser on my HP notebook running Windows Vista stops responding sporadically? If I click my “ShowDesktop” icon then open browser again then the browser will work again for a while.

    Do you have any other software running in the background that might be slowing the PC down? Does this only happen when you use specific websites?
