How come my computer reboots when it gets to the login screen?

by on June 24, 2009

Q: I have a Dell E1405 with Windows Vista. When I try to start the computer the Windows log-in screen sometimes comes on but then shuts down after that. Sometimes it doesn’t even make it to the log-in screen. What can be done?

  1.

Check your Windows Vista Event Viewer. (probably under the Control Panel -> Administrative Tools)

Take a look in here and see if it mentions any serious errors happening right around the time of the reboot. Normally Windows should log any errors before rebooting.

Wait, if this is an ‘all the time’ problem, and you can never log in to the computer at all, this isn’t going to help.

Okay, as your computer is starting up, try tappig F8 repeatedly, you should get to a Windows Advanced Options menu, from there try to launch windows safe mode. Let me know if that works.

However, if the computer still just keeps rebooting, there is some kind of a hardware issue, and you’ll need to talk to Dell or another professional about getting it fixed.
