Error when compressing HP recovery drive

by on July 12, 2009

Q: When I tried to compress my HP recovery drive I get the following error message: Invalid root in registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Hewlett-Packard\HPActiveSupport\HPLDR\Cpmpact” code 80070002

My operating system is Vista Home Premium 64-bit and my computer is an HP Pavilion entertainment Notebook.

I am also having the following problems:
1) My System restore will now only take me back 5 days, which is not far enough back. This happened after I backed up my registry when I was trying to fix iTunes (could not burn a disc in iTunes.)
2) I cannot do a disc cleanup, when my computer starts I get the error message “The procedure entrypint ARCON_GetConnectVersion could not be located in the dynamic link library ArcCon.dll.”
3) My files will not back up to Norton online storage, and the option to burn them to disc is not shown, even after Norton was reinstalled with a newer version.

A: You should not alter or compress the contents of the HP recovery drive. Doing so could cause the recovery drive to malfunction. Here’s a quick procedure for using the recovery drive to restore your computer to its factory state:

1. Turn on your computer and then back up all of your important files to external media (USB flash drive, CD, DVD, external hard drive, etc).
2. Restart your computer. When you see the HP logo you should also see a list of options. One of these options should be “system recovery” (or something very similar). Press the button which corresponds to the desired choice. On most of the HP computers I have used the correct button to press has been F10.
3. Follow the recovery instructions.
4. Install a reputable security program such as Kaspersky Internet Security 2009. I do not recommend Norton products.
5. Install all updates for Windows Vista EXCEPT Service Pack 2 (SP 2 has caused problems on both of my Windows Vista computers.)

PS: I feel that recovery discs are better than recovery drives. If you do not already own a set of recovery discs for your computer then you should be able to order them from the HP support website.
