How come I keep getting “Delayed Write Failed” at the bottom of my toolbar?

by on July 20, 2009

Q: I keep getting a message in my bottom toolbar that says “Delayed Write Failed”. It also says certain files were not saved and data was lost. I cannot figure out how to fix this and it seems like it is causing my computer to freeze up. I have Windows XP home edition and an HP computer. Is there some kind of fix for this problem that I can download?

Do you have any USB disks, camera memory cards, network drives or any other kind of data storage devices plugged into the computer?

Do you know what drive the computer is having trouble writing data to?

yes, actually i just got a magic jack about a month ago. and it plugs into my usb. i have it plugged into the usp port on the front of my tower. I believe it is having trouble with the C drive.

Try running the PC without the Magic Jack installed, and see if that helps.

If you think it’s C: drive problems make sure all your important stuff is backed up, just in case you’re walking into a total hard drive failure. (But you already had your important stuff backed up right? ; )

With backups done, I suggest you try the following:

    1. Exit all programs.
    2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    3. Click Performance and Maintenance.
    4. Click System.
    5. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
    6. Right-click your drive device, and then click Properties.
    7. On the Policies tab, click to clear the Enable write caching on the disk check box, and then click OK.
    8. On the File menu in Device Manager, click Exit.

If that doesn’t help, you’re going to need to run some diagnostics on the drive, to see if it’s dying. There will be software to do this on either the pc manufacturer and/or the hard drive manufacturer website.
