Is it possible to use an iPod Classic and an iPod Touch with the same computer?

by on August 16, 2009

Q: I recently got a new iPod Touch with my new Mac. I would like to use both the new iPod Touch and my old iPod Classic. I want to use them with the same computer and I want them to contain the same music. I’ve read forums and help sites that just don’t explain it well enough.

You shouldn’t have any problem using both iPods on the same computer. There isn’t anything special or different about using two ipods on the same computer.

iTunes will track both iPods as different devices. You should be able to even have both plugged in at the same time. You’ll need to specify what songs get loaded on each one independently, but you can streamline that process by using playlists.

Okay, great! Now how do I sync the playlists so that each ipod gets certain playlists and not the others?

You really don’t have to do anything differently.

Continue to do what you’ve been doing, plug in an iPod, click on it in iTunes and then check off the playlists you want to sync on the right hand side.

Give it a shot and let us know if you hit a specific problem.
