How come links show up as broken images instead of links?
by Guest Geek on October 1, 2009Q: I have Windows XP and use Internet Explorer. A few weeks ago some of the sites I visit did not work as they had. Some of the links on the pages are showing up as gif files instead of html. This is on my computer, if I use a computer elsewhere the links are still html. Does anyone know what might be wrong and how to fix it?

Have you tried clearing out your browsers cache to see if that helps solve the problem?

Good morning Matt and thank you for answering. I have cleared the cache, cookies, ran the reg cleaner and just about everything else I can think of except removing xp and reinstalling it. I really didn’t want to have to do that and I am not even sure if that will solve the problem?

Well my next suggestion would be to try installing FireFox. It is always a good idea to always have two web browsers on your computer anyway just in case. By installing FireFox you will be able to test if FireFox has the issue too. If FireFox and IE both have the issue then we know the problem is with the operating system and if FireFox does not then we know the problem is with IE and that might mean an uninstall and reinstall of IE might fix it but I would not suggest uninstalling IE unless you have another browser just in case things go wrong.

Matt, you are my new hero!! I installed firefox and everything that was not working, is now. I have spent weeks trying to get a solution to the problem and you are the only one to tell me I could try using firefox instead. You have made my day, my computer works again. Thank you so much.
