How come my Dell XPS is giving me an unmountable_boot_volume error?

Did you make any changes to your computer before this happened; hardware upgrades, new drivers, windows reinstall, etc?
If this was totally out of the blue there could be a problem with your hard drive, so you should contacting dell about warranty support.
To get to the data still on the drive you can try booting a CD bootable version of knoppix from http://www.knoppix.net this will allow you to copy off any important data from the drive. With your data safely removed you can try a fresh windows installation which should resolve the problem assuming there aren’t any hardware issues with the hard drive.
