How come I cannot play copy protected DVDs on my computer after upgrading to Windows 7?
by Guest Geek on October 26, 2009Q: I just updated to Windows 7 and now I’m having trouble playing DVDs. Windows media player says it can not play protected DVDs. Power DVD says “The TV Out port of your display card is not working properly” and “This copy protected disc can not be played when the TV out function is enabled.” What can I do to fix this?

Might be an issue with your display settings. Try changing around your video output settings. You can adjust these quickly by holding down the Windows Key and pressing P
Try changing to the option on the far left, might be called “Computer Only” or “Disconnect Projector”.

Are you running the latest versions of the drivers for your video card?
Mark says: on October 26, 2009 at 6:15 pm
I believe so. I ran an auto check and it said I was up to date.
Could my graphic card be to old.
I went from XP to Windows 7

I’ll need to know the make and model of your video card.

It is “standard VGA Graphics adapter” i think.
Chip type: VIA K8M800.
Not sure if thats what you need

Since device manager is showing “Standard VGA Grapgics Adapter” is means that that proper video drivers aren’t setup. Looks like motherboards with the VIA K8M800 chipset have on-board graphics, so I’m guessing that is what you are using.
Please run windows update to and make sure you download all important updates. Also install any drivers that come up there and see if that helps.
These older on-board video chips don’t often get updated drivers written for them, so you might be out of luck. So your other option would be to purchase a dedicated video card and upgrade your computer.

I did windows update and had the computer search for updates.
Is there an offical website where I might find the driver for this card.
Also, is there a inexpensive graphic card you would suggest. I don’t play games, I just want to be able to watch DVDs and AVIs with TV quality.
Thanks

Also, the date of my current driver is from 2006.

Drives would be here: http://www.via.com.tw/en/support/drivers.jsp
You’ll notice drivers for the K8M800 for Windows XP here, but not for Windows 7.
For a cheap stopgap this will do the trick for $30 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127368

Thank you very much.
I wish i would have known, I would not have bought windows 7 if i knew i would have to buy a new graphics card.
Best buy has a similar card for $5 more. It has 128bit instead of 64, do you think it’s worth the $5.

Nope, the GeForce 5200 is 5 years older than the 8400. That card isn’t worth $5.
