How come my computer freezes when I use my webcam for video chat?
by stellfamily on October 30, 2009Q: Can you help me figure out why my computer freezes when I use my webcam for video chat. I’ve tried my laptop and my desktop, and both freeze. My daughter says she doesn’t have that problem when she video chats with other people.

If daughter is using the same web cam, computer and chat software. Then you’ll need to determine what the difference is between what you’re doing and what your daughter is doing.

she is using laptop with bult in camera. I am using Logitech IM webcam. We were both using the gmail video access. So why do you think it keeps freezing?

Have you tried using the Logitech webcam with the laptop?
By freeze, do you mean that the whole computer locks up, the mouse doesn’t respond, etc? Are you forced to reset the computer, or does it unfreeze after a brief period of time? Or is it just the video picture that freezes?
In addition please provide what version of Windows you’re running, what web browser and version you’re using and what kind of internet connection you have.
Also make sure you’re running the latest drivers for this webcam from http://www.logitech.com

My daughter is in New York, using a camera built into her laptop. I am using a laptop with a Logitech webcam. The video picture freezes, is what I mean by ‘freezes’. I am using Windows Explorer 8, OS Windows vista Home Premium., and internet connection is ATT’s DSL extreme.

Try Firefox instead of IE8, and see if that helps: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/
