Will an ASUS UL30A-X5 Thin and Light Laptop play the latest video games?
by striker on December 26, 2009Q: I am thinking about getting an ASUS UL30A-X5 Thin and Light 13.3-Inch Black Laptop. The main uses will be portability at school and other places and surfing the net and watching DVDs and doing school work on. The second priority is the ability to play games like left 4 dead 2 and team fortress 2 with decent settings on. Does this laptop meet these requirements? If not what would you recommend? Don’t want to go over $800 Thank you in advance.

Most laptops cheap out big time in the video card department. Unfortunately this is a very important component for playing games. So even with a super fast processor and a bucket of RAM most laptops will still have a hard time playing games. Also, you can almost never upgrade the video card in a laptop, so you’re going to be stuck with what you buy.
As you’re shopping for laptops keep a close eye on the video card in the laptop. If you see any kind of Intel Integrated Video Card, forget about it. First look for something from ATI or nVidia. The NVIDIA GTX 260M is a nice laptop video card.
Take a look at the Asus G51 series of laptops, you might be able to find some close to your $800 price point. If you’re budget is too tight and the gaming is important consider ditching the laptop idea and just going with a desktop, you’ll get a lot more bang for the buck.
