Which free antivirus and antispyware protection software should I use to replace webroot?

by on January 5, 2010

Q: I have Webroot Antivirus and Antispyware but it expires next month and I can’t really afford to pay $40 to renew it. So what I’m wondering is, out of these free antivirus programs which should I use to replace it? Avira Anti-vir? Avast? Panda Cloud? Microsoft Security Essentials? Threatfire?

I suggest Microsoft Security Essentials. You get malware/spyware and virus protection for free. Also, the motivation behind the product is different. Most of the other programs you suggested exist to promote their paid versions. There is no paid version for security essentials, it exists to improve Microsoft and Windows’ reputation. I’ve had good luck with security essentials on Xp, vista and 7 both cleaning out infections other products had trouble with and running smoothly in the background not slowing down the pc.

Beside Microsoft Security Essentials, also thinking avast antivirus is another good choice.
