How come Internet Explorer starts up when I start up my computer?

by on January 10, 2010

Q: Lately, Windows Explorer has been starting up when I reboot — without being in any of my “Documents and Settings\…\Startup” folders. It starts up in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat.com, where the Acrobat Version 9 update installation files are. A regedit search for explorer.exe or Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat.com turned up nothing obvious. How do I get rid of this? (WinXP Pro)

Its possible that you may have spyware that is launching on startup. Have you ran any virus/spyware scans on your PC yet?

Yes, I have the McAfee suite running. True, I’ve only noticed this problem some time after my weekly scan — but I don’t reboot that often (I use Standby mostly), so it could have been there already. But I’ll do another scan just to be sure
