Unable to access Windows Update after a failed update

by on January 27, 2010

Q: I tried to download the latest update for Windows Vista SP2 but it failed. Now when I try to access Windows Update I get the error codes 80070005, 80070002 and 8024000C. I have gone back to a good restore point and I still get the same errors.

I contacted Microsoft tech support and they said I would have to reformat my drive and reinstall Windows Vista to fix the problem. Are there any other solutions and is upgrading to Windows 7 an option at this point?

A: Based on the information you have given us we have to agree with Microsoft here that you are going to need to reinstall Windows Vista. It is unfortunate but sometimes this stuff happens with computers and is why you should always make sure you have a good backup plan in place.

If you want to upgrade to Windows 7 now would be a good time but we would not suggest you upgrade from your current install of Windows Vista because that could lead to a lot of problems since you currently have problems with Windows Vista. So you should certainly reformat your drive and if you have an upgrade version of Windows 7 then you would need to reinstall Windows Vista and then from there upgrade to Windows 7. If you have a full version of Windows 7 then you can reformat and install the full version of Windows 7 directly.
