Changing Internet service providers causes IP address to change

by on March 20, 2010

Q: If I change my Internet service provider would my IP address change?

A: IP addresses are much like phone numbers used to be where they are assigned to specific businesses/organizations and are not portable. Phone numbers, however, have moved into the 21st century and are now portable but currently IP addresses are not. There are many reasons why IP addresses are not portable but that is for a different discussion.

So this means if you change your Internet service provider that your IP address will most certainly change. We should note that, unless you have a static IP address from your Internet service provider, your IP address probably changes anyway. If you are not sure if you have a static IP address then chances are you do not.
