How do I restore my computer after getting a virus?

by on April 1, 2010

Q: I have a Dell XPS 410 PC with Windows XP media OS. It has been infected. I get the blue page of death and I need to repair. I have all of my OS disks. What do I need to do?

Hopefully you have a backup of your data before you restore your OS. If you do not have a backup and need the data then you should try to boot into safe mode to attempt to pull your data off.

If you are ready to re-install your operating system you can put the windows XP cd into the cd-rom tray, restart your computer, and hit the F12 key. This will bring you to a menu which asks you what you would like to boot from. Choose the CD-Rom option. Follow the onscreen prompts to continue the install of windows XP. Once the install is done insert your Dell Drivers CD and install the drivers for your system. Be sure to get Antivirus on the computer as soon as possible and before you start downloading things from the internet. I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials. This is a free AV product and can be found here… http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
