The dead laptop battery dilemma

by on April 13, 2010

Q: What happens to a laptop when the battery dies? Will it still boot up?

A: Everyone that has ever owned a laptop has run into the dead battery dilemma where the battery will no longer hold a charge anymore. The typical laptop battery will last 2 to 4 years but a laptop, if taken care of, can last a lot longer so we get to a point where the battery will only run the computer for 30 minutes, then 10 minutes, and then maybe 10 seconds.

Since most people use their laptops plugged in all the time it is not usually a problem or even noticeable until one day when you have to move your laptop for some reason or your plug is accidentally disconnected and your system shuts off. You can continue to use your laptop plugged in all the time and it will act just like a desktop computer such that if the power is disconnected it will just shut down. This is not a problem at all and your computer will run just fine this way.

So you can be confident that even if you don’t feel like replacing the battery on your laptop that you can continue to use the laptop for a long time just by treating it like a desktop computer and keeping it plugged in while using it.
