Moving to 32bit from 64bit

by on April 15, 2010

Q: I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit OS and am having multiple compatibility issues and installation problems. I’ve acquired Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit OS and would like to install it. Do I have to reformat my hard drive and lose all my programs or can I install the 32bit OS over the 64bit OS? Will this action convert the 64bit OS to 32bit?

A: When you switch between a 32bit and a 64bit version of a Windows based operating systems you really need to reformat your hard drive and start from scratch. It doesn’t matter if you are going from 32bit to 64bit or going from 64bit back to 32bit. There is just so much that changes that having anything left from the previous install is going to cause so many problems. Just make sure you back up all your data and have all the install disks you will need for all your programs before starting the process.
