Is a Wireless-N router good enough to run two laptops and a Skype phone?

by on April 16, 2010

Q: I want to install a router for two laptops and one desk top and a Linksys Skype phone. Would these specifications be ok? Wireless-N (Draft N 2.0) – dual-band – Gigabit Ethernet, USB ports.

Yes that Router will be able to run those devices. You will only be able to take advantage of the “N” speeds if your devices have a Wireless N NIC installed. This will still work with G and B devices as well though.

      Hi Josh
Thanks for taking time in answering my question.
Sorry for the inconvenience, but your answer brings me to another question. Does the Wireless N NIC comes integrated with most PCs? Or can it be installed? And what does Wireless N NIC mean?
      Thank you much,
      Ron

Most Laptops now a days are coming with at least Wireless G Network Interface cards in them. Desktops usually don’t have the wireless card in them unless it is a multimedia PC such as the HP Touchsmart series. If your computer does not have one then yes, it can be installed. Wireless N is the standard ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11 ) You can read more about it there. NIC stands for Network Interface Card.
