How come my computer will not boot when I connect my hard drive to it?

Q: I have a problem with my old computer. I installed Windows XP and turned it off. The next day I went and it wasn’t booting up. It turned off withing 1 second of the loading. I took everything apart and debugged the problem and it seemed that every time I connected the power supply unit to the HDD, then the system would turn off. When the HDD wasn’t connected, then it worked fine, obviously it didn’t boot up but it gave me the indication that the PSU wasn’t busted. Is there anyway I can recover that old HDD?
