What does it mean when a laptop is dropped and then it says no operating system detected?

by on June 20, 2010

Q: My HP dv2-1127ea laptop was dropped onto a wooden box. When turned on it does the initial HP sign and then I get a message in the top left hand of the screen saying no operating system detected. Whats the likely problem? I’ve been told that the hard drive is most likely damaged but what other problems could it have and is it worth getting another hard drive or will there still be other problems with it?

  1.

They can certainly be issues with the computer still, though hard drives are often the most delicate (doubly so if the laptop was running at the time of the fall).

If you’re making it to the no Operating System detected screen there is a good chance the laptop is okay. Since laptop hard drives are relatively inexpensive vs buying a new laptop I’d attempt the new hard drive first.

If it turns out the laptop is truly broken, either sell/return the hard drive or buy a USB enclosure for it and use it as extra portable storage.
