How does hard drive formatting work?

by on July 15, 2010

Q: How does hard drive formatting work? Specifically, if I were to purchase a raw internal drive, format it for my older WinXP system, and use it as a storage drive, could it later be transferred to my Win7 system with the data still on it?

Yes, the formatting is the same for both operating systems. You can move the drive back and forth like a giant USB memory stick without issues. If you run into anything about what “file system” to use when formatting the new drive, you’ll want to select NTFS for best results. This will probably be the default anyway, so don’t worry if you aren’t prompted.
