What requirements do I need in a laptop to be able to use WiFi at home and at different locations?

by on July 20, 2010

Q: I am ready to purchase a laptop computer and go to a DSL provider with 1.5mbps service. I also would like WiFi capability so I can use it when it is available. What are the laptop PC requirements along with the additional hardware I will need? I will only be connecting one laptop to my DSL service.

The Laptop depends on how much money you would like to spend and on what your primary use of it will be. If your looking for something to get you online for just surfing the web and is ultra portable Dell, HP, Lenovo all make greate netbooks that feature built in wifi, a 10″ screen, and a compact keyboard/mouse. You can purchase these for anywhere between $300-400 dollars for a decent one. I would suggest checking out Dell and HP’s websites to see what laptop suites you/ your budget the best. Pretty much all laptops now will have built in Wi-Fi capabilities.

For your DSL connection, Depending on who you go with for service the modem may have built in router/wireless functionality. You will have to check with your ISP to verify what Modem they will be installing. If you need to provide your own Wireless Signal I would recommend going with a Linksys Router such as http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124284&cm_re=linksys_wireless_g-_-33-124-284-_-Product.
