How come my computer cannot stay online for more than a minute after my cable modem was replaced?

by on August 4, 2010

Q: The wireless modem burnt out and when Time Warner came and replaced it with a new modem my desktop computer started saying its not connected to the wireless network. However, I can still get on line. For a minute. Then it kicks me off and says I’m not connected. Time Warner says it’s my computer that just happened to break at the EXACT time they changed the modem. Anyone know what could be the real problem?

  1.

The issue is probably either with your cable modem, your wireless router or with a loose/bad coax or Ethernet
    cable.

First check all your cable connections to make sure nothing is crimped or loose. If you have any extra Ethernet cables or if new ones were used in the installation, try swapping them out to see if that helps.

After that let’s do some basic process of elimination troubleshooting.

I suggest you unhook your router, and connect your computer directly to the cable modem with an Ethernet cable.

You may need to reboot your computer and cable modem as well as wait a few minutes for the connection to begin to work properly.

Try using your computer this way to see if you run into any problems. If you do, then you should try a different Ethernet cable, then if you still have problems contact Time Warner.
