Should I go with a faster i3 processor or a slower i5 processor?

by on August 9, 2010

Q: I will be going off to college next year and am currently looking for a laptop. Here are the two I am considering….a Sony Y Series or a Sony EB Series? I just don’t know which one to get.

I customized them to be about the same on their website (both have 4GB of memory and 500GB of RAM) However, there is one minor difference. One has a IntelĀ® Core i3-350M processor (2.26Hz)-EB series, and the other has a IntelĀ® Core i5-430UM processor (1.20GHz) with Turbo Boost up to 1.73GHz-Y Series)

Does it matter? Is that much of a difference? Or would you recommend one over the other?

It’s basically impossible to compare two CPUs by just looking at their model numbers as to which one is a better performer.

I suggest using http://www.cpubenchmark.net/ to compare different CPUs. Based on their website, it ranks the Core i5-430UM processor as being a faster processor.

Here is a snip from one of their pages: http://www.imgupload.org/images/153_cpu_view.png

I think the key here is that they are different speeds though so make sure you compare the correct CPU’s when you go to the site.
