Can I move the hard drive from my Toshiba laptop into a Gateway laptop?

by on September 8, 2010

Q: I fried my Toshiba laptop. I was wondering if I can move the hard drive into my gateway laptop as is. I.E: Would I have to change the drive caddy? Or can I just use the one the hard drive is already in?

    1. Almost all laptops only support having a single hard drive installed internally.
    2. If you wanted to swap one drive for the other, you should be able to do this as far as hardware goes, however you probably won’t get the computer to boot properly without reinstalling Windows.
    3. If you want to get data off the Toshiba laptop’s harddrive or use the drive for extra storage, then you’ll want to buy some kind of external drive enclosure for 2.5″ hard drives.

Only other limitation would be if either of these laptops is very old and still uses IDE hard drives instead of SATA.
