How come my Dell Studio keeps crashing with a blank screen and a bloated cursor?

by on September 18, 2010

Q: My Dell Studio (windows 7) keeps freezing to a black screen, and the cursor is really bloated.

-I have spoken to dell and they ran some tests and told me it isn’t a hardware fault.
-The problem has never occurred when playing games
– It usually happens on photoshop or the internet (FireFox and chrome), but these are the only software I tend to use
-I’ve gathered some information on the problem from error reports etc and they will be added as a comment.

I’m really stuck for what to do here, since dell told me that it wasn’t a hardware fault and that to get software checked it costs about 70 quid. The computer is pretty much brand new and i have a sneaky suspicion they didn’t test it properly and it may be a hardware fault.

-The computer often recovers from the lockup and shows me this, only to shortly lock up again when the cursor becomes bloated

Looks like a video card issue. I’d try downloading the latest drivers from ATI/ AMD for the card and see if it makes a difference.

If it doesn’t I’d really think it’s a hardware issue with the video card and it should get swapped out to verify.
