How come I get an error ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt?
by Shenn on October 3, 2010Q: I bought a used laptop with out any additional CD. After about a year it won’t turn on. It gives me the message that it’s missing a file or that it’s corrupt. How can I get a copy of <windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

I’d suggest trying the ‘last known good configuration’ first. This page has instructions on that: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000626.htm
If that doesn’t work for you, here is a guide for dealing with this issue: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000646.htm
Also, many laptops ship with a hidden restore partition instead of a set of CDs. This can then be used to restore the computer. To find out if your laptop has this, check the manufacture’s website a look for an on-line manual, and it should have restore instructions.
