How come I cannot find my external hard drive after closing it while formatting it?

Q: I have a Toshiba computer and a 500GB external hard drive. I am wondering how come I cannot find my external hard drive anymore after closing it while it was being formatted to fat 32?

    It should still be shown in disk management, you can reformat and assign a drive letter from there:
