How come my HP Pavillion dv500 will not shutdown normally?
by flakebar on October 19, 2010Q: My HP Pavillion dv500 won’t shutdown, go on standby, restart, sleep, or hibernate. If I try to put it on sleep, it does everything that it’s supposed to do, and then just stays on my desktop background.
It won’t shutdown unless I hold the power button for about 5 seconds. My system runs on Windows XP. Any help please?
I really don’t want to do a System Restore.

There are a lot of things that could be causing the problem, so it’s difficult to offer a specific suggestion.
A system restore would very likely fix your issues and get your system running a lot faster in general.
Since you’re against that, I can really only suggest reviewing these tips from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308029
I can also offer my own services to assess the computer and see if I can resolve the issue without a system restore. E-mail me at mark(at)askageek.com if you’re interested.
