How come I am only able to save images as bmp files?

Q: I have tried everything and still cannot save files in any other format other than unknown bmp. This only happened a few days ago…before then I was able to save animated gifs, as well as jpg and png. Now I can’t do that. Sometimes it will even come up as HTML document
