How come my desktop icons will not open when I double click on them?

by on November 16, 2010

Q: None of my desktop icons will open by double-clicking or by right-clicing & choosing “open”. I tried choosing “open with” , but it doesn’t give me the option of the correct program (word or excel). Brand new laptop w/Windows 7 (loaded my version of Word/Excel 2003).

  1.

Try launching word and excel from ‘All Programs’ and then try going to File > Open and opening some documents to confirm that the programs are installed correctly.

If that works fine, go back to Open With… click Browse and navigate to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 11\

You should find the .exe files for Word and Excel in there.

Select them from the list, and make sure the ‘always use this program to launch this type of file’ checkbox is checked.

I can open documents successfully by going through “All Programs”. I tried the “Open With” way & got all the way to browse. It only lists :\Office 14\ – not 11. If I click on “14″ I get the message “no items match your search” & it’s empty. Any suggestions?
