Is the quality of converting from VHS to DVD different for a combo drive vs a USB converter?

by on December 13, 2010

Q: I read your article (VHS to DVD Converter) about how to convert a VHS tape to DVD and I have understood that there are 2 ways :

1) Using a combo device (directly from VHS to DVD).
2) Using a USB converter which converts from the video to the computer.

Since the prices are dramatically different (combo costs about 10 times the USB converter) the question is if there is a difference in the quality or the 2 methods are equal?

Conversion quality is going to be dependent on the device used. You may find some USB converters that are better than some combo devices and vice versa.

I’m not sure where you’re at, but I’m seeing prices on average for a good USB converter running around $50, and the combo device running around $200 on amazon.com

All that said, I do own this AVerMedia MEZUSBGDR DVD EZMaker USB GoldUSB converter.

However I have yet to use it : )

Thanks for the answer , but still it isnt clear what method to choose since despite the difference in prices
(in average the combo is 4.5 times the usb ) you say that
sometimes the quality of the usb is better.
Could you please specify the exact technical details
which make the difference? in what manufacture information should I focus in order to know which make the better quality?
For your question : The dilema is mainly between these
    2 products :

    1) combo :
