Q: I have Microsoft security essentials and Microsoft malicious software removal tool, I have scanned my computer with both and they have found nothing, but every time I open something another window opens like I have a virus, I need help. Is there anything that I can get free that might help? What can I do?

Have Microsoft Security essentials installed does not make your computer full proof against viruses. If you feel that you may have something infecting your computer there are several other tools you can try installing.

    1. Go to http://www.malwarebytes.org and download their free tool.
    2. Install
    3. Run the updates to make sure you have the latest version.
    4. Run a full scan of your computer.

Chances are it will pick up on cookies which is normal. But it may find any malware or spyware that is on your computer causing duplicate windows.

If you are still having problems after running this please let me know and we can run another diagnostic tool.

Can you provide some more detail about “every time I open something another window opens”

Is this in your web browser only?
Other programs, what versions and program names does this problem happen in?
Do you mean open as in launch a program or click a link on a website or type in a URL and press enter?

What does this window open up to?

If this only happens in your web browser, does the same problem happen in other browsers? (Try IE, Firefox & Chrome).

If this only happens in your primary browser and not others, uninstall or disable any extra toolbars. Or try launching the browser’s safe mode and see if that makes a difference. Each browser does this different, so google the name of the browser and ‘safe mode’ for instructions.
