Why do I keep getting an error saying I cannot update VPI/VCI on my Huawi HG520c modem?

by on January 9, 2011

Q: I have a Huawi HG520c modem. I keep on getting the following “ERROR: can not update… VPI/VCI duplicate.”

I have tried to reboot and re-set to factory settings etc. No joy. My VPI should be 8 and my VCI 35.

I’m able to change this, but when submitting, I get the ERROR.

Can anyone help me? Any legends out there?!

    1. Check the other settings pages and make sure 8 and 35 aren’t already set somewhere else.

    2. Test the settings that the modem defaults to and see if your internet access works correctly. If it does, then you’re fine and no changes need to be made.

    3. If you’re still having trouble, you should contact your Internet Service Provider for assistance.

    Hey there Mark.

Thanks for that. As far as I can tell, under ‘other pages’ I can not see the 8 and 35 set anywhere else…

my ISP is South African Telkom. They tell me it is a hard-ware issue and that this is my ‘issue’ to sort. gutted. I guess as long as the bill gets paid…

Any other thoughts are welcome… or must I give up and buy a new modem?! (rather not of course) Thank you for your response though! really appreciate it!

I’d suggest a return, or reviewing the documentation that came with the router to see what your warranty options are. Trying a different router would be a good idea, and there is no reason you should be expected to pay for a junk unit that didn’t work.

If possible get a different brand. D-Link, Netgear, and Linksys are all great options if available to you.
