by on January 12, 2011

Q: My boyfriend has a Gateway 6518GZ Notebook. He keeps saying it has a wireless modem & just needs me to figure out whats wrong with it get the drivers or whatever so that he can sign on to the internet using our Wifi at home. Checking out the specs.. the modem is listed as: 56K ITU V.92 ready Fax/Modem. But there is a network spec that says: IntelĀ® PRO/Wireless LAN 802.11g. So.. i wanna ask a geek, cause i don’t think this thing can do what he wants it to. Can this computer given the info above connect to our WiFi (if it had correct drivers)?

Yes, the IntelĀ® PRO/Wireless LAN 802.11g, would enable the laptop to connect to your home wifi network.

If you connect to this page on intel’s website from the laptop it will detect the installed wireless card and install the correct drivers: http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/detect.htm

If you find you’re still having trouble, make sure the wireless card is turned on. Most laptops have a switch or a hotkey that turns this on or off.
