What kind of replacement battery do I need for my Dell Inspiron 1440?
by Shansung1188 on January 15, 2011Q: I need to buy a replacement battery for my dell inspiron 1440. The original battery type is J399n. rating: 14.8v
capacity: 32wh
It also says only replace with k450n, j399n, g555n.
What information is most important in buying a new battery?
I’ve found some batteries that are K450n replacements but do not list j399n as a compatible type. I also can’t find any batteries matching the 14.8v rating. is it ok to use a battery with a 10.8v or 11.1v rating ?
Even Dell’s site for replacement batteries lists a J414n battery as the replacement.
Desperately need some help sorting all of this out!
For best results, enter your service tag on this page: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/batteryconfig.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd
and choose from the list of compatible batteries.
The most important thing when buying a new battery is to buy one that the manufacturer of the laptop has stated is compatible with the the laptop. The higher the WHr the longer your laptop will be able to run on the battery.

Someone told me you could only go +1 or -1 from the original Volts. So if my orginal is 14.8v, and I replace it with an 11.1V, will that do damage?

Unusual for the replacement battery to be that different.
If you think that Dell’s website is inaccurate you should give them a call, as they’ll have the best information of what will and won’t work with the laptop. Additionally they should be willing to stand by that assessment if they sell you something that screws up the laptop.
