How come Windows tells me I have a disk hardware configuration problem after deleting an old partition?

Q: I deleted my old partition, made a new one and am now trying to reinstall XP on it. Thing is it got to 100% then froze and stayed like that over night… Now when the disk tries to boot it gives me this error…

Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware. Please check the Windows documentation about hardware dish configuration and your hardware
reference manuals for additional information.

What should I do?
