How come my computer cannot to the Internet via dialup?

by on January 17, 2011

Q: I am trying to help my dad with a computer problem, He has dial-up on his computer and lately the computer seems to be unable to make a connection. If it does connect, he will usually get kicked out after a few minutes with a message saying he has been disconnected. He will try to connect again as prompted only to get a server not found error. He is running firefox but this will also happen if he tries to connect using Internet Explorer. I am not really sure what the problem is. It is the only computer in the house, a newer acer laptop. Any advice? Any other info needed? Thanks so much!

  1.

The three areas where there can be a problem is with either the dialup modem you’re using, the age/condition of the phone wires in use or with the dialup service provider you’re using.

So you can talk with the service provider, or try another modem or a newer telephone line.

All that said, if it is even remotely possible, I’d strongly suggest you look into some better internet service. Basic levels of DSL and Cable internet service are pretty cheap. If you’re not sure what kind of service is available in your area try: http://www.dslreports.com/search
