Is it better to have more system RAM and less video RAM or more Video RAM and less system RAM?

Q: Is it better to have 512Mb dedicated GFX on a 6Gb RAM system, or have 1Gb dedicated on 4Gb RAM system, considering memory can be shared with the GFX card?

Looks like you are shopping for a gaming laptop.

    – Buy the fasted video card you can, you will not be able to upgrade it.

    – Assuming the video card models are the same in the situation you describe, I’d get the 1gb dedicated Video memory, and 4GB of system memory, assuming the laptop will support more ram down the road. Laptops generally allow for very easy RAM upgrades, so see what the max supported RAM is.

Consider going desktop if possible, you’ll get more performance for a lot less money and you can upgrade anything!

Thanks for the info, I guess I’ll go with the better card then =]

And normally, I would get a desktop, but I’m heading off to Uni and would rather take a good gaming laptop than my now slightly outdated desktop and a poor laptop.
