Unless you’re planning on doing iOS (iPhone/iPad/etc) App development (which requires Mac OS X and an Apple Computer). The computer you have is just fine. No special hardware is required.

Save your money and spend it on a good intro class at a local community college or other school. You’ll get a lot more out of that then a newer computer.

If you are planning on doing a lot of programming I might suggest having a lot of memory installed on your computer and running a 64bit OS.

What are the specs of your computer?

If you are using Windows, use Windows 7 64 bit with at least 4GB or Ram if your Motherboard supports more than you can always install more than 4gb.

Most programming applications are resource hogs.
